LCOS-SLM (Spatial Light Modulator) is a device that can freely electrically control the phase of a laser beam. The phase of the laser beam can be controlled in two dimensions by sandwiching liquid crystal between a CMOS chip (where the pixel electrodes are arranged in a two-dimensional structure) and a transparent electrode placed on a glass substrate. The digital image output from the PC is converted into an analog signal through a dedicated driving circuit, and the voltage is applied to the pixel electrodes on the CMOS chip. This voltage tilts the liquid crystal molecules and changes the refractive index of the liquid crystal, thereby controlling the phase of the light irradiated to each pixel.
LCOS-SLM can control the phase of light with high precision in 8 bits, and is widely used for various purposes, from research on the generation of optical vortices to industrial applications such as aberration compensation and multi-point branching microcode labeling in microscopic observations.
